CRUISE R LOSE POKER
RUN
2009 DATE:
Friday Evening May 1st - about 6:00pm
PHOTOS FROM PAST POKER
RUNS
This event is held on
the eve of one of the largerst Hot Rod and Classic Car Shows in the
area, the "Cruisin' the
Drag". For the Poker Run, aproximately twenty one Amateur Radio
Operators are needed in two or three person teams to man seven "Poker
Hand Draw Stations" located at various business around the
city. These teams of HAMs will act as "official observers"
as the drivers participating in the Poker Run stop at the stations
to draw a single card from the deck of cards. The HAMs then verify and
log which card is drawn, and stamp the player's game
card to "authenticate" the draw. Of course the goal for
the drivers is to collect the best poker hand possible from their
seven stops. There are large cash prizes at stake, so accuracy and
keen observation on the part of the hams will be a must.
This is an extremely FUN event, and as a plus,
you get the see some of the nicest and coolest Hot Rods and Other
"rides" for hundreds of miles around.
Again this year, GFAARC will sponsor a
"FIFTY-FIFTY" draw, with tickets available at each Poker Run Draw
Station, and at the final destination. Poker Run winners, as well
as the winner of the 50/50 draw will be announced at the end of the
event at the Westside Pizza Hut in the
Westgate Mall parking lot.
We need your help. Spouses, Friends
(licensed or not) are welcome to come have fun with us. Each one
of the seven checkpoints must have at least ONE Amateur Radio operator,
but due to the sheer volume of work and speed involved, it will
take THREE (at minimum two) volunteers at every station.
Due to the nature of this
event, those actively involved in assisting at the Poker Run, must be 18
years old or older.

GOBLIN PATROL Saturday October 31st - about 5:30pm
Early every Halloween
evening, the little ghosts, princeses, and mini-superheros roam the
streets looking for tasty treats, and an evening of fun.
GFAARC and other ARES members also take to the streets to keep
watch on the LITTLE Trick or Treaters.
Our primary intent is
to be "extra eyes on the street" to make sure older bullies, don't
confront smaller children. We also watch the older kids to make
sure they don't vandalize property or cause trouble in other
ways.
The mobiles on the
street are in contact with an Amateur Radio net control, who in turn can notify city dispatchers if the need
arrises.
Each Amateur Radio Operator
is assigned an area of town to cover, so naturally the more mobiles we
have on the streets the smaller the area each HAM has to patrol, and the
better we can provide coverage to the
community.
For more
information or to join us for this event, please E-Mail

, come to one of our meetings, or check into our
ARES
net.

National
Christmas Tree Visits Great Falls "One Time" event November
7th, 2008
The "National Christmas Tree" that graced
our nation's capitol in Washington DC during the 2008 Christmas Season
came from the Bitterroot National Forest in Western Montana. The
tree made many stops along it's way to the White House; most notably
for GFAARC, on the 7th of November right here in Great Falls.
Members of the club, along with members from the local CERT
responded to the call for assistance. Bundled up against the
chill, they grabbed reflective vests and traffic wands, their
trusty hand helds, and set about the task of directing
vehicle traffic and parking. Parking was spread among three
separate locations each about 1/2 mile apart, and visitors had their
choice of walking or riding shuttle buses to the tree viewing
area. Several thousand visitors took turns filling the limited
parking areas, and the HAMs and CERT members kept things moving
along smoothly. As soon as a parking place opened up at one of
the three lots, that information was relayed via 2 meters, and another
vehicle was soon on it's way to fill the vacancy. Below are links
to some photos compiled from this event.
State wide photos of the
tree cutting, loading, and transportation, as well as various viewing
stops.
